Music Video Textual Analysis (Not In Genre)
From doing research into music video's we looked at artists that aren't in our genre and looked at what makes a music video.
The first artist I looked at was Katy Perry with her song 'Last Friday Night' from 2011
From looking at this music video in close detail I decided that Katy Perry is a pop singer and her genre is POP. The music video itself has a strong feeling of entertainment and it defiantly tells a story throughout the whole video. The music video also has a film like feeling to it, with the use of big bold titles, the use of a pan at the beginning and the dialogue from Katy and actors in the video. The song itself is up beat and defiantly matches the video in which a 'nerdy' teenage girl goes to a party and completely changes her look and dances supposedly being 'Friday Night' the girls has a so much fun that she wants to 'Do It All Again' the following Friday
The upbeat music is certainly not hindered by the use of florescent colours Katy and many other charters in the video wear, including party decorations and balloons. the fast cuts and close up of Katy Perry show who the singer is in the video and elaborates the party element of the video, like Andrew Godwin said that there might be elements of other media concepts such as tv or films there is the concept of the video game 'Just Dance' which is shown frequently in this video.
Overall I am a big fan of both the song and the video and looking at this I now know in what way our music video must differentiate from this one.
The next music Video we looked at was 'Girls' by The 1975
From looking at the 4 boys in the band and the layout in which it is set, I can really tell that this band is alternate/ pop/ rocky/ indie. The music video also starts out in black and white but at seconds it turns into colour, with lots of colour being shown in the flower tittles to the colour walls in the close up of Matt Healy's (lead singer) face. The close up of the electric guitar and the techno sounding music also give away that this band are alternate/indie. Then girls walk onto the set and start playing the guitars and drums, it is then clear that the girls are imitating the boys when they start lip sinking to the song. Furthermore the quick cuts of Matt facing the girl in different directions is enhancing the rocky/indie element to this song. The use of black and white with colour continues throughout the video with the girls in bright colour cloths but the boys in black, furthermore the background is usually white with the occasionally coloured back ground, moreover the zebra crossing also exaggerates the black and white theme running throughout. Overall i love the song and the music video and again this shows me how to differentiate this music video to my own.
The next Music video I looked at not in my genre was Avicii ' Wake Me up'
Again, like Katy Perry's video, this one seems quite filmic due to dialogue exchanged by the two girls in the thumbnail shown. Avicii's genre is techno dance music and this really come across at in this video especially at the end where it shows clips of shows and festivals where he has performed with the fast paced music and fast cuts of Avicii and people dancing to his songs. The music video shows two girls that 'don't fit in' in the town where they live, this is shown by the use of clothing both the girls wear compared to the rest of the people in the village, furthermore its shown by the use of shots of the villagers looking at the girls as they walk through town showing the look of concern and dislike on their faces. The oldest one then goes in search for an answer as to why they dont belong and finds people with similar markings on their skin as herself and the younger one she left back at the village, its later shown that the mark is the the logo of Avicii. In the end the girls go to where they belong and leave the village.
Music Video Textual Analysis (In Genre)
Some Music video's we found in our music genre.
One was 'Keep Your Head Up' by Ben Howard
Ben Howard is an indie singer songwriter. In this Video we can see Ben carrying multiple things such as a bucket collecting water, a shovel, bundles of hay. The use of close ups in this video show the intimacy with the artist and the audience, a certain element that occurs alot in this genre of music. The colour in this video is warm with lots of yellows, oranges, greens and blue. he is later seen
with friends and is building something which is shown to be a big water slide down a hill in the country side. From looking at this music video i now know that my music video has to have certain concepts such as close ups.
Another music video I looked at was 'Thinking Out Loud' by Ed Sheeran
Again, like Ben Howard, this music video has alot of close ups. Although this video is just dancing the whole way through I can really feel the emotion and feeling behind it with the song lyrics and and beautiful choreography being performed exultantly. Again, the use of oranges from the lights and coloir grading give it that warm feeling like most Indie music video's have. This music video again shows me what i must include in my music video.
Another music video in my genre was John Mayer 'Clarity'
This Video again has lots of close ups again showing the connection between Indie/singer songwriters artist, something I must have in my music video as Gianluca is a indie singer songwriter artist. The bright warm colours also reflect the connection between this genre of artist and their music videos.
Overall i can see what is needed in my music video as my artist is a singer songwriter and therefore the music video must follow these conventions
