Digi Pack/Poster Research and Finished Product (Ancillary Task)

Research

Our next task was to now start making our Digi Pack, this meant that we needed to  get some photos that linked to our artist.  But First we needed to do some research. We looked into artitsts in the same genre as Gianluca, a band called 'The Courteeners' and watched msuic video's of their songs. We then made our poster with tour dates on for that band on which we based from their style, music video, genre of music ect. Below is two of there music video's we watched and then my idea of what their poster might of looked like.

More research was needed into the genre of similar artists and what their pictures look like, therefore I researched artists such as Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, John Mayer and Nina Nesbit as they are all singer songwriters. I had alot of fun searching for pictures of these artist as they gave me inside into what I could achieve for my Digi pack. Below is a collage I made of all  these artists.

I also made another collage of our artist Gianluca, to see what his iconography was. Therefore I screenshot different videos of him playing his own songs and his cover of songs on his YouTube Channel, I found that most of his videos were in colour but some were in black and white, (however the image shown below is printed in black and white)  I also took screenshots from our music video to give a link between music video and Digi Pack.

We then circled the images we best thought suited Gianluca (shown in purple pen) to use for inspiration for when it came to making our Digi Pack

After doing this, we decided to sketch some ideas of what our Digi pack might look like, this included our album art work and poster. We decided that it must include Gianluca as its his song, But also use some  pub features like the dart board or the bar. We drew some ideas and decided that we liked the look of them, below are the sketches we made

Finished Products We both decided that the Bounty Pub would be the best location as we shot the music video in there. We marked a time that we would go and meet with our artist and go and take some photos. unfortunately our artist was unable to attend on that day, therefore we decided to go anyway and get the shots we needed without him in and come back another day to take shots of him in the bar.

We took a range of photos in the bar on the first shot such as the dart board and the things on the walls in the pub, we then put them into photo shop and tested out some fonts of writing with the pictures just so that we would know what we wanted when it came to a picture of our artist. This took a while trying to find a right font. Many were the right kind of font but were too bold, some looked good when looking but when put onto our image it didn't look right at all. We knew that it had to be simple and plain but something bold and new as Gianluca is a new artist but is very simple with just him and his guitar and we wanted to portray this through our type face. We still hadn't found a right tpye face but used one just as a filler until we got some photos with Gianluca. We then arranged a new date with our artist and took a range of photos with him using different lenses and angles.

Typography

Once we had got them and put them into Photoshop we worked very hard in trying to find a type face that wold best suit him, it was easier for other groups as their artiste were well known and therefore had type faces already, however with us it was different as he is an unknown artist. We wanted to get it right and so this meant spending time and effort in getting the perfect type face. Eventually we found a type face we both liked, it wasn't too bold and it was simple, we felt like it was missing something though and therefore put a line underneath his name, we decided that we would carry this line through our design in our album art cover. Moreover the image was originally in colour but we decided to put it in black and white to give it more of an effect, this worked much better and therefore we made sure the poster would be in black and white as well.  Below are images of final piece .

                                                                       Front Cover

                                                            Inside Left Cover

Inside Right Cover

It was harder for our back cover as we didn't want it to look messy with the an image and writing of the tracks on his album. We decided that it would look best with a simple black colour and then writing using the same font as the front cover to write the names of his songs down the back.

                                                                    Back Cover

We then moved onto our poster, which again we found hard to do, We looked at previous posters of artist in similar genre and saw that their poster was an extension of their album Therefore we wanted to make sure it matched not only with the album but with the artist as well as he is an unknown singer songwriter.Below is an image of our poster we made

                                                                              Poster Draft

However, we were unsure with this design for our  poster, so we decided to make a new one. This time we got ride of the square picture and made the whole background the picture, for our first poster we used the same image as the one on the front of our album cover, In this one we used the same image as the one on the inside left of our album art work.. We still liked the white writing however it was getting a bit lost in the white in the picture so therefore we had to darken the contrast and brightness in the image using the Photoshop tool to do so. This made the writing stand out better and more visible,Below is the final product of our poster, we included the tour dates as before but changed the writing on the poster as we felt it was better than 'EP out Now'. Furthermore we added elements which we had seen in other artists posters such as the 'available on iTunes' logo and his twitter name with the image of the twitter bird to give it that edge, we also put the names of record company's we thought would take him on such as Sony and Columbia, as we researched this and found out what other artist they had signed such as Adele, Pharrell Williams, Olly Murs and many more. Below is an image of our final poster.

Final Poster

Overall I am pleased with our Digi pack, both the album and artwork of our poster have come together very nicely.

Magazine Advert Kodaline

The image on the advert is very bright and happy, with the blues and greens from the water grabbing the attention. The name of the band is in bold white writing which again grabs the readers attention. it has the names of the places and when they are performing  in bold writing writing which again stands out of the backdrop of the image. It also allows the reader to know when the tickets will be on sale. Again Kodaline is a band that are singer song writers like our artist so we will be looking at this advert for inspiration

Magazine advert The Kooks

The advert doesn't shows any of  the members in the bad, however it does have the places and dates of when and where they are touring, it also has names of other band such as 'Catfish And The Bottleman' which will be their supporting acts. The blue writing of 'On Sale Now' shows the reader that they can now purchase the music of this band. Furthermore it also has where else you could find their band such as a website. The colours of this advert are very cold with the Blue and white

Ben Howard Magazine Advert analysis

The Image itself on the advert relates to the album art work, here we see Ben coming up for air rather than diving in the sea which we see on the album. His name is in Big and bold red writing, different colour to album but same font. It has big bold writing of the dates he goes on tour and where which really grabs the readers attention. It has information as too where you can purchase the tickets. Furthermore the colouring is different to the album but just as effective, the album has very bright blues where as this advert has a much colder feeling to it. Ben genre is Indie the same as our artist so when it come to doing our magazine advert we will look and take ideas from Ben and also similar artists.

Album cover analysis - Ben Howard 'Every Kingdom'

Tittle

The Tittle in this album art work is very simple and bold to catch the eye of the reader. I like how it blends into the the lighting of the picture with the white light reflecting from the surface of the water on to the name of the artist. I also like the name of the album itself 'Every Kingdom' suggesting there is a kingdom beneath the water and that the man swimming is searching for it.

Image

The image on this album cover is again very simple with not alot going on. I like the fact that you have the different colour of blue gradually getting darker the further the man goes down suggesting mystery which again links in with the name of the album. The light hits the image very nicely in the top left hand corner. The way the bubbles are floating up to the top of the surface of the water remind me that the man has to return where he came from at some point and that he was perhaps looking for something again linking in with the name of the album.

Album Cover analysis- Gabrielle Aplin 'The Power Of Love'

The images is bold and bright with the use of powder paint in the background. I like the use of dark and light colours such as the peachy colour and dark blue which makes Gabrielle stand out in the Foreground with her white dress. The white dress she is wearing shows some sort of innocence and the background reminds me of explosions, as if she were in a battle ground suggesting love is some times very naive and challenging, which also links to the name of the album 'Power of love'. The use of the world 'Power' suggests some kind of force which links to the image of the album. I really like this album cover, its fun and stands out but you can also tell that there is a meaning behind it. Overall, looking at this album cover it shows me what i need to achieve with my album cover, it needs to be strong and stand out. i will be thinking of this when making the Digi Pack.

Album cover analysis - Ed Sheeran 'Multiply'

Tittle/Image

I like the fact that it doesn't  have Ed's name on the cover as it give it that quirky edge to it and entices people to pick up,of course to his fans its very distinctive with his first album being called 'Plus' with a plus sign on the front.
I like the charcoal black colour against the green, and that it looks like its been drawn on with a pen due to some parts being missed out and not filled in, This gives it a slight urban edge that implies that this could be a indie album but also has some urban songs on it like rap music, which some tracks are on the album.

Codes and Conventions of music album magazine advert

Image

  • The Image should link to the image on the album cover or be relevant to the image
  • it can be the same image as on the album or be different, but usually have same context, for example a picture of the artist that's on the album might be a different image of the artist on the advert.
  • sometimes there is a boarder around the whole advert, however some adverts do not have this, but the both look equally as effective in putting across the message.

Text and Information on advert

  • The artist/band name is usually in big bold writing to grab the readers attention
  • The name of the album tends to smaller than the artist names but still big enough for reader to see
  • The advert will usually have the tour dates on and the venues of these dates
  • At the bottom of the advert in small writing there is usually a website which relates to artist and the names of any  production company's they are with such as 'Sony'
  • In some adverts there can also be reviews from newspapers saying how much they rated the album giving it stars out of 5
  • There is also a logo of an music company which distributes music such as iTunes

Finished Music Video

On finishing uploading our 2nd Unit into final cut pro and editing it all together we then spent a couple more weeks editing the whole video just making sure it was perfect and we were happy with it, we had also put in some effects onto the clips where the boy and the girl are in the field to give it sort of a 'dream' feel to it. We then sent into Colour and started to colour grade the video. We wanted to make the performance in the pub warm by increasing the reds and oranges we also did this to the field scene with the boy and the girl. However we agreed that the electric guitar solo scene should be a little colder in colour to show the contrast between the 'then and now' narrative we were trying to put across to our audience.

Once colour grading had finished we then started to upload it to YouTube. However when it first uploaded the quality wasn't very good as YouTube does compress the video alot. Therefore we decided to remove the video and re-upload it, this worked alot better. The finished version can be seen below

Overall I was very proud of how our music video turned out. It matched what we had in our minds at the beginning of the process and turned out even better.

Editing and 2nd Unit

Editing

Once we had started editing our music video and putting piece in place it really felt like it was coming together. Both the Pub location and Narrative shots were put down onto our timeline where we thought best appropriate. However through this style of editing we felt like it was more filmic than a music video because of the length of the shots, they were too long and in turn slowed down the pace of the music video. Even though our songs is quiet slow, there are certain elements in it such as the guitar licks throughout the song which makes the music faster pace, this is where the faster editing and more shots should of come in.

Due to this not really working for us, our teacher then suggested to get in place the whole of the performance and then later we could decide were to put in the little bits or narrative. We decided to do this and started to make a new sequence with just the performance. This was tricky at first as we had to get every single shot in the right time with the music as he was playing it on guitar. Luckily, when shooting at our location we played the song in the background so that we knew the pace which he was playing at and this really helped us match it up in the editing stages of our music video.

Once we had placed down our whole sequence, it looked really good, the shots we got really worked well with the ambiance of the song and lyrics. We made sure that key elements were matched with what we were hearing as to what we were seeing. For example, when key lyrics such as 'so you and I can talk like normal'   we matched this up with a extreme close up to his mouth singing along to the words as we felt we needed this intimacy with the artist as the words are so powerful.

Now that we had our whole sequence placed out, it was now time to add in the narrative. To make sure this worked well, we had to place these clips in a way that made sense to the song as well as the story. Again we matched key lyrics to key images such as 'Come down from your shoulders' we match this to clips of there shoulders.

After we had finished this, we showed it to our teacher and the only criticism that he had was that you never get to see the electric guitar. We both agreed that this should defiantly be filmed and put into the music video. However we didn't have anymore locations where we could film, I suggested the field again even though it was cut down, we decided that this would be a good idea as it could have been a metaphor to the relationship (that they are no longer together just like the corn is no longer there).

2nd Unit

We then arranged a date for or second unit. We arrived and met Gianluca at our location, and filmed in the field again. Like I knew it would have been, the field was cut down but still had elements of the golden colour we had previously in our first shoot. We filmed  multiple shots including close ups of the guitar, his eyes and mouth, we also did a pan o him as he was playing. We also got him to sing as the lyrics carries on throughout the electric guitar solo . the shoot was  done in under an hour and we were happy with all of our shots that we got on the day.

The next day at school, we uploaded the file and converted it into Final Cut Pro and started editing it. The shots we got worked really well with the song as the pans were dynamic and the colours of the field worked well in  the background.

Overall I happy with the way our music video is coming together, I am happy that we got our second unit done and uploaded. It is coming together very well and I am happy with the progress that we have made throughout this process.

Below are images of the story board and shot list of our second unit of Gianluca in the field

Costumes

Pub Shot- Costume

On the day of the pub shoot it was just Gianluca, so we told him to wear  jeans or some kind lose fitting trousers, a T-shirt and converse/trainers. He turned up on the day wearing lose fitting green cargo trouser, a black top and trainers this suited the description we had told him perfectly and suited him as an artist

Cargo Trousers He wore on the pub shoot                                            Black T shirt he wore

Field Shoot-Costume

On This day of shooting we had both Gianluca and Juliet. We asked Juliet to wear a pair of blue shorts and a flowery top to show her 'girly side', we also asked if she could have her hair down as this was on  the reasons we chose her (long blond curly hair) and enclosed shoes such as converse as the field had long grass that could have been irritating. For Gianluca we asked him to wear similar to the previous day but not the exactly the same, a T-Shirt and jeans or lose fitting trousers, He turned up in a pair of Black jeans and a white top, Both actors had listened to what we had suggested and both looked the part

 2nd Unit

Again like our first shoot, we only had Gianluca, We said used the same description as to the last two we gave him and he turned up in the same black jeans as the Field Shoot and a white baseball top with black sleeves and the 7Up logo on and his Electric guitar.

Making Our Music Video

Recording

A couple of weeks before filming we booked a session in a recording studio for our artist to record the song to a much higher quality. This allowed us to then burn it on to a CD and use it when filming.  The recording session went very well, the artist knew what he wanted to achieve in the amount of time we had in the studio. He manged to record the track several times which allowed him to go back on the track and make any changes or pickup on some mistakes that he had made.

Filming

On the first day of Filming, myself and Sapir went to our location at the pub early to set up. Thirty minutes later Gianluca and Juliet arrived to begin shooting the ending of the music video. This ran smoothly and only took forty five minutes to shoot, following this Juliet left,as we no longer needed her that day. We then returned inside the pub to shoot Gianluca's Performance part of our music video. Again this ran smoothly, the Pub allowed us to use their speaker system so that the camera would pick up the pre recorded song, this would help us to match up the exact timings in editing. W e made sure to stick to our shot list and mostly got close ups of Gianluca and the guitar.

Overall i was happy the way that day went as we manged to get everything done on our shot list and more which will really help us when in Post Production.

The next day we all met up and made our way to our 2nd location. We really hoped the warm colours would come through to match those lights in the pub, luckily for us the weather was beautiful and the colours were lovely and warm. Again this day ran smoothly, the actors were patient with us and the camera and did everything we told them to do as well as voicing their opinion to the shots, which was very useful as this also made us do shots again to make sure they were perfect and that we had enough footage when editing. The day itself was a very fun day as we all got along well, this was helpful to myself and to Sapir when filming as if we hadn't gotten along I think the day would have been alot harder to direct and shoot. Furthermore it was good that both Gian and Juliet had met the day before and this had settled any nerves they might of had for the narrative shoot. They worked well together and with us which in turn made what could have been a stressful shoot day due to weather or location going wrong into a relaxed environment.

To conclude both days went well for me and Sapir when shooting our music video, the atmosphere was very relaxed as we knew what we wanted to achieve in the time we had and both actors cooperated well.

below are pictures of myself and Sapir filming on our 2nd Location

Your Place Used To Be Mine

Moving back to your old place, afraid you might see me there
standing in your tyrant face, your smile ain't seen no wear

Props and Casting

Props

when it came to props we knew that Gianluca would have to appear in the music video with his guitar so we knew that the guitar would have to be involved, both acoustic and electric  Apart from that, we didn't have any more props but we need to make sure that he did bring them, so we had discussions between him to make sure he brought his guitar to the shooting dates which involved the guitar.

Casting

When it came to casting we knew Gianluca had to be involved, so that wasn't an issue. However the problem came to when castings female character for the field scene. At first a fellow friend of mine and Sapirs and school friend of Gianluca first came into our heads as well as another girl, from mine and Sapir's school. When it came to deciding we thought our Friend from school Juliet would make a good character as we imagined someone with very long blond curly hair and tall. Juliet fitted this description, and therefore we asked if she would be interested in helping us film. She replied to us very quickly that she would love to help out. We told her our shooting dates and everything ran very smoothly

Below is a picture of Juliet

Music Video Research

Now that we have our artist and locations. It was time to do some research into what sort of shots to use when it comes to shooting our performance and narrative in our music video.

We decided to look at similar artist who write songs and have a similar sound to our artist. These consisted of Ben Howard, James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Ed Sheeran and mostly John Mayer.

We took note of their music videos and came to the conclusion that most of the shot used were close ups/ mid, low angle movement to give power prospective to the artist. We also noted that the camera was never still and always had some sort of movement eg tracking or just on a steady cam, it was never on a tripod unless in a wide shot where we could see everything including the surroundings.

Here are some of the music videos we looked at and took some notes from

Textual analysis of Music Video's Not in Our Genre/ In Our Genre

Music Video Textual Analysis (Not In Genre)

From doing  research into music video's we looked at artists that aren't in our genre and looked at what makes a music video.

The first artist I looked at was Katy Perry with her song 'Last Friday Night'  from 2011

From looking at this music video in close detail I decided that Katy Perry is a pop singer and her genre is POP. The music video itself has a strong feeling of entertainment and it defiantly tells a story throughout the whole video. The music video also has a film like feeling to it, with the use of big bold titles, the use of a pan at the beginning and the dialogue from Katy and actors in the video. The song itself is up beat and defiantly matches the video in which a 'nerdy' teenage girl  goes to a party and completely changes her look and dances supposedly being 'Friday Night' the girls has a so much fun that she wants to 'Do It All Again' the following Friday

The upbeat music is certainly not hindered by the use of florescent colours Katy and many other charters in the video wear, including  party decorations and balloons. the fast cuts and close up of Katy Perry show who the singer is in the video and elaborates the party element of the video, like Andrew Godwin said that there might be elements of other media concepts such as tv or films there is the concept of the video game 'Just Dance' which is shown frequently in this video.
Overall I am a big fan of both the song and the video and looking at this I now know in what way our music video must differentiate from this one.

The next music Video we looked at was 'Girls' by The 1975

From looking at the 4 boys in the band and the layout in which it is set, I can really tell that this band is alternate/ pop/ rocky/ indie. The music video also starts out in black and white but at seconds it turns into colour, with lots of colour being shown in the flower tittles to the colour walls in the close up of Matt Healy's (lead singer) face. The close up of the electric guitar and the techno sounding music also give away that this band are alternate/indie. Then girls walk onto the set and start playing the guitars and drums, it is then clear that the girls are imitating the boys when they start lip sinking to the song. Furthermore the quick cuts of Matt facing the girl in different directions is enhancing the rocky/indie element to this song. The use of black and white with colour continues throughout the video with the girls in bright colour cloths but the boys in black, furthermore the background is usually white with the occasionally coloured back ground, moreover the zebra crossing also exaggerates the black and white theme running throughout. Overall i love the song and the music video and again this shows me how to differentiate this music video to my own.

The next Music video I looked at not in my genre was Avicii ' Wake Me up'

Again, like Katy Perry's video, this one seems quite filmic due to dialogue exchanged by the two girls in the thumbnail shown. Avicii's genre is techno dance music and this really come across at in this video especially at the end where it shows clips of shows and festivals where he has performed with the fast paced music and fast cuts of Avicii and people dancing to his songs. The music video shows two girls that 'don't fit in' in the town where they live, this is shown by the use of clothing both the girls wear compared to the rest of the people in the village, furthermore its shown by the use of shots of the villagers looking at the girls as they walk through town showing the look of concern and dislike on their faces. The oldest one then goes in search for an answer as to why they dont belong and finds people with similar markings on their skin as herself and the younger one she left back at the village, its later shown that the mark is the the logo of Avicii. In the end the girls go to where they belong and leave the village.

Music Video Textual Analysis (In Genre)

Some Music video's we found in our music genre.

One was 'Keep Your Head Up' by Ben Howard

Ben Howard is an indie singer songwriter. In this Video we can see Ben carrying multiple things such as a bucket collecting water, a shovel, bundles of hay. The use of close ups in this video show the intimacy with the artist and the audience, a certain element that occurs alot in this genre of music. The colour in this video is warm with lots of yellows, oranges, greens and blue. he is later seen
with friends and is building something which is shown to be a big water slide down a hill in the country side. From looking at this music video i now know that my music video has to have certain concepts such as close ups.

Another music video I looked at  was 'Thinking Out Loud' by Ed Sheeran

Again, like Ben Howard, this music video has alot of close ups. Although this video is just dancing the whole way through I can really feel the emotion and feeling behind it with the song lyrics and and beautiful choreography  being performed exultantly. Again, the use of oranges from the lights and coloir grading give it that warm feeling like most Indie music video's have. This music video again shows me what i must include in my music video.

Another music video in my genre was John Mayer 'Clarity'

This Video again has lots of close ups again showing the connection between Indie/singer songwriters artist, something I must have in my music video as Gianluca is a indie singer songwriter artist. The bright warm colours also reflect the connection between this genre of artist and their music videos.

Overall i can see what is needed in my music video as my artist is a singer songwriter and therefore the music video must follow these conventions

Music Video Preparation

Firstly, we had to decide on an artist to represent in our music video. So we went away and came back with some suggestions and shared them with the group. We decided our best option would be to go with a band  who were local and who Sapir knew called 'The Naked Recreation' with their own songs 'Stain'. As a backup, we also emailed Gabrielle Aplin about using her song 'Human', she is a songwriter known for her hit songs such as 'Panic Chord' and 'Power Of love' however her record label never got back to us, we also emailed an American Band called Ten Sleep to see if we could use their song 'Tired step' who did get back to us, however we decided by this point to stick with The Naked Recreation as we already had ideas for the song. However we were still waiting for a reply from them to officially confirm to film with us as we wanted to include them in the video itself. After waiting 3 days for a reply we decided that we needed to move along quickly and so made the decision to contact another Singer song writer who is local to our area. We decided not to go with Ten Sleep due to reasons such as they aren't going to be in the video, and also we couldn't think of a concept which would match them as a band. Therefore we contacted Gianluca Volpe and he got back to us a couple of hours later saying he would love to be involved in our music video which in turn would promote himself as an artist. A day later we got a reply from the Naked Recreation stating that they would be unable to film with us. This made things alot simpler and we now were able to get on to deciding what concept we would like for Gianluca's Original song 'Your Place Used To Be Mine'.

<-----    Here are some Images of Conversations i had with Gianluca when asking for Permission and taking part in our music video, others are confirming dates for recording studio. Furthermore we kept him up to date with the music video and what to expect.                                                         ---------->

We then started to think of a concept for the video itself. We analysed the lyrics to the song and came to to the conclusion that it was about a relationship that no longer was working for either of the two people. We had already decided that we needed a performance based  concept with a bit of narrative.

We then needed a location for filming. During the process of waiting for a response from the Naked Recreation I had already booked a pub for them to film in, however once they had said they couldn't film with us, we were thinking of canceling our booking with the pub. But once we had a confirmed response from Gianluca we decided that the pub would also suit his style and therefore kept the venue. We then decided that we were going to film our narrative part to the music video in 2 different locations: 1) Tower Bridge 2) Burnham Beeches. However after contacting the city of London to get permission to film on Tower Bridge we would have to pay £250 to film for 1 hour and therefore decided to rule this out. We still wanted to film on a bridge so began to look else-where. We eventually found a small bridge near to where we live and some girls had filmed there for their film openings so we knew we wouldn't need permission. After much thought about the bridge idea, we then decided to not film there at all as we thought we needed to keep the video itself simple and 2 locations would be enough. We then contacted Burnham Beeches and asked if it would be possible to film there, they said that it would be fine as long as we send them pictures of where we would like to film before we go and shoot.

We have planned to go and take some shots of both locations in the next few weeks and also get Gianluca into a recording studio so that we can have a high quality track of the song, as the one we have currently isn't as high quality as we would like it for the backing to our music video .

After our shots of each location were taken, we the uploaded them on to the computer. When looking through our shots we noticed that the pub setting had very warm colours due to the lighting, however Burnham beeches was very green. Therefore we decided that this again was no longer a suitable location as the two different colours were not going to match well in the final video, even through colour grading. This again left us without a 2nd location to shoot our video. However a few weeks later, I found a location that was both public and had warm colour. We then decided this was going to be our final location for our music video

We are very happy with our decisions for our music video, although we were initially a week behind the other group with our complications with our artists, but we eventually caught up with them and now on track to producing our music video.
